Buffalo State Hospital – May 5, 2013 – Set 2

By dave | December 29, 2018

During our first visit to Buffalo State we got very lucky. Naturally, after the tour ended I was asking about getting more time to photograph (which I would be more than happy to pay for), etc. Christine, the absolutely fantastic person in charge of operations at the Richardson Olmsted Complex indicated that I would really…

Buffalo State Hospital – May 5, 2013 – Set 1

Construction on the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane began in 1872 with the hospital opening in 1880. The architect was Henry Hobson Richardson who designed many well known buildings, including Trinity Church in Boston and the Thomas Crane Memorial Library on Harvard’s campus. Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital – Trip 1

By dave | September 12, 2012

Much to my chagrin, I have never explored the Kirkbride building at Greystone. Too much drama and too many legal hassles have surrounded it in recent years, and the rewards were far outstripped by the risk. By dave | February 1, 2007

Built near the Metropolitan State Hospital campus, the Gaebler School was created specifically to address the needs of children with mental illnesses. As with many institutions of it’s type, the stories of former patients who resided within these walls are not always pretty. It is chilling to walk the halls of this building, passing seclusion…

Paul A. Dever State School

Originally built in 1942 as a military facility and POW detention center, this complex of buildings was converted into a mental health facility. Countless identical buildings, interconnected by tunnels, are now abandoned.

Grafton State Hospital – Trips 1 and 2

By dave | November 6, 2006

Grafton State Hospital opened in 1901 and closed in 1973 after growing to encompass a huge campus. The building which remains abandoned definitely shows evidence of its age and attempts to retrofit more modern systems to it over the years. Most of these shots are on Fuji Pro 160s, and were my first experiment with…
