Dragging the enormous filthy ladder into place for this shot was tough, and after the 5th or 6th adjustment I was getting tired of moving it around. I think in the end it was worth it though. I entered this massive space and immediately noticed the pattern in the glass even though it was probably 50 yards away. The shots I took of just the glass didn't quite work, and when I saw the ladder I knew that's what it needed. The reasons why are pretty much straight out of the rules of composition, so I'll leave it to Ron Bigelow's fantastic set of articles on composition to explain further for the curious.
