wow the graffiti artists must love that place - how does a place like this fall into disrepair?

Thanks for the comments Dylan!

This place fell into disrepair because of the overall economic downturn in Detroit. It is shocking just how badly the city has been devastated by the decline of the American auto industry and of American manufacturing in general. Usually when you go to a city you can get a general sense of the economic climate from looking around, but nowhere that I have ever been does this more than detroit. You can see evidence of the lack of economic drive everywhere.

In this case, this is just a huge train terminal built to service a city that not many people want to go to any more. There just isn't the traffic to necessitate a place like this still being in operation.

That is amazing and really sad. Your photographs of this place are almost like a foretelling of what cities will be like come the end of civilization. Living in Belfast in Northern Ireland I've seen what economic and terrorist troubles does to the look of a place. maybe Detroit can learn from places like Belfast which have changed completely in the last 10,15 years...
